But what if you want to show your passion for sports and remain stylish at the same time? Is there a way to do it in a subtle way?

Enter the world of rugby shirts.

A rugby shirt is similar to a polo shirt, which makes it a great alternative to them. It comes with either long or short sleeves and always has thick horizontal stripes (also known as hoops). The difference lies in the fact that the rugby shirt‘s collar is more prominent, pointed and can sometimes come in a different color that the rest of the shirt.

What are they made of?

Rugby shirts specifically made for the game of rugby are mostly polyester. The reason is they fit tighter on the body and are more aerodynamic.

However! …

For going out, you shouldn’t go for the polyester ones. Cotton breathes and it’s the number one choice for a variety of items of clothing. Yes, this includes rugby shirts. Sure, if you like to play rugby, you probably already have a few polyester rugby shirts but, for going out, you need the cotton ones.

Another difference between the “sportswear” rugby shirts and the “street wear” ones is that the formers have a big number on the back. You won’t always find numbers on rugby shirts that are meant to be worn on a night out.

To me, the presence of the number on the back dresses the outfit down, and I don’t personally want that. I prefer to dress my casual outfits up, to stand out a little more.
But this is up to you. Style is about following some guidelines as well as making personal decisions.

Are rugby shirts for me?

Let me put it right from the start: if you’re too short, rugby shirts are NOT for you. They have big horizontal lines that make you look wider. If you’re not that tall, your goal should be to look taller. Vertical stripes are for you in this case (think dress shirts).

If you have a belly, rugby shirts are not for you either. They’ll make your belly stand out so much you’ll want to run away home and change. 

But… if you’re skinny and either tall or of average height, you should definitely go for rugby shirts. They’ll balance you out by widening your midsection.

Layering

The natural question every guy wants to know the answer to is: what goes well with a rugby shirt?

Well, a lot of things!

You can wear a t-shirt or even another collared shirt under it. Think about it: if you were tower the rugby shirt in the picture at the beginning of this article, what would happen if you wore a white shirt underneath? You would get two white collars one tailored made suit on top of the other.

That’s coolness at its best right there…

Here are some other things you can wear with rugby shirts: slim ties, sports jackets and even some sleeveless vests (stay away from vests with vertical stripes – since the rugby shirt has horizontal stripes, you’ll create a weird effect).

Pea Coat

The pea coat tailored made suit is my favorite winter coat, because it’s the “manliest” out there. It’s originally been worn by 18th century European sailors, who, because of the harsh conditions, needed a double breasted item of clothing to keep them warm.

You’ll see in the pictures below why I said it’s so manly. But how the practical uses of a winter coat are more important than the way it looks. So let’s talk about this for a moment.

What’s it made of?

Pea coats are usually made of wool and are of navy blue color. Wool is the best fabric to wear in cold temperatures, which makes the pea coat  tailored made suit  a good choice.

However, if you face extreme temperatures, you should probably consider something that will keep you even warmer. Pea coats you find in the stores are not really designed for extreme temperatures.

A nice bonus for some pea coats is that their lapels can be turned up and buttoned, to keep your neck warm. You may not need to do this if you like to wear scarves, but it’s good to know.

OK, assuming you don’t live anywhere near the North Pole, let’s see some actual pictures of pea coats.

Here’s a classic pea coat. It instantly hits you that it’s a man’s coat.

The thing I really want you to notice is the outfit. Notice how the guy is wearing a light gray sweater. The contrast with the coat is very good. The entire outfit is not very colorful, yet it’s very stylish.
Also notice how the last button is kept unbuttoned. This is the way to go unless it’s really cold outside. Just like in the case of suit jackets, the last button should be kept unbuttoned. This is done for two reasons.
The first reason is that you will look more relaxed. Buttoning all your buttons (and this goes for shirts too) will make you look… “tight”.

The second reason is that you’ll feel more comfortable when sitting down. If the last button were buttoned, you’ll feel a little uncomfortable and you would have trouble keeping your legs in a comfortable position.

Here’s another example. Again, look at the outfit. The pea coat contrasts with the white pants very well. I know some guys would never wear white pants during winter but that’s really a personal choice.

The thing with white pants during winter, autumn and spring is that they can get dirty very easily. But, from a fashion perspective, they’re a great choice that will definitely make you stand out.

The next guy decided he wants a little more attention. He raised the collar from his pea coat. Take a look:

Some will say this raising the collar thing is outdated. I say, again, that it’s a matter of personal preference.

3 The quality of the material and the stitching DO matter. You just know when a blouse is good quality. There are plenty of non-designer clothes that look great. Don’t buy the label, buy the product. 

I bet you would have liked to know about this a few years back, eh? Just think about the amount of money you could have saved..

So what can YOU do to make sure you pick the right clothes?

For starters, get over this thing about buying expensive designer tailored made suit   to impress people. Instead, impress them by choosing clothes that flatter your skin complexion and that match each other.

Choose accessories to show your personality. Belts, ties, rings, scarves, buttons, hats, pendants, pocket squares – you have plenty of choices.

Lastly, do you know what separates a quality item of clothing from an inferior one? Take a wild guess…

It’s the fabric.

Fabrics like silk, linen and cotton are great, while polyester and synthetic fibers, while they are cheaper, will probably not last longer. The higher the percentage of quality fabric in a piece of clothing, the longer it will last.

Winter is still here, no doubt about it. I just came back from jogging and I can vouch for that. 

But spring is around the corner and we need some solid fashion errr… style tips. But before we go into specifics, we have to know what we’re aiming for.

Spring is usually associated with rebirth and vibrant colors. This means it’s the PERFECT time to stand out from the crowd by means of a crazy little thing called layering.

Spring and autumn are perfect for layering. During those seasons it’s not too hot such that you can’t put two items of custom made suits together… and not too cold such that you’re forced to hide your cool clothes behind a coat.

It’s time to innovate when it comes to style. I’ll take you by the hand and show you what you can wear this spring and draw all women’s eyes on YOU.

Let’s tackle the most expensive things first.

#1 Pants

Spring 2011 still calls for simple denim jeans, nothing fancy. Go for lighter colored jeans to stand out more.

Jeans are a staple of any man’s wardrobe; this mean’s you’ll build on them with well matched quality clothes.

Chino pants are a great way to add some color into your outfits. If you’re really bold, you can go for more vibrant colors. Here are some amazing GQ outfits:

I personally had a yellow pair a few years back. It was pure GOLD (no pun intended) when it came to women. They all had their eyes literally glued to me.

If you’re looking to stand out from the crowd but don’t want to buy too many expensive clothes, here’s my advice: buy a pair of colored chinos, then wear them with black shoes/shirts/t-shirts.
You can go for white and gray, of course. White, black and gray go well with almost anything.

#2 A brown leather jacket

Are you a fan of leather jackets? If so, you’ve probably worn black all your life. This is the perfect occasion for you to try something new.

Brown  jackets can make you stand out but not too much. It all depends on how well you match them.

Now you’re probably thinking: what on earth can I match brown with?

Great question. Brown is actually dead easy to match. White, yellow and blue are the first choices you can think of.

Does that look AMAZING or what? Yeah, I know, the jeans aren’t exactly “plain’ol”, they have some cuts here and there… But it still looks good.

#3 A pocket square

Do you have a blazer or a sports jacket? If so, this mean’s you’ll spend a minimum amount of money to make it look awesome.

Pocket squares are like the cherry on top of a cake: they communicate you’re a well rounded, well dressed stud.

I’ve noticed an increasing trend in wearing slim ties but pocket squares are still very rare. This mean’s we’ve got an edge here. Pocket squares are inexpensive and very effective, as long as you know how to match them.

#4 A pair of brogue shoes

If you’re not a converse fan, how about NOT buying the same old brown shoes? For once… please

The Difference Between a Blazer, a Sports Jacket and a Suit Jacket

I have to admit, some time ago I was really confused. Blazer, sports jacket, made to measure suit  jacket, what’s the difference? Although the blazer and the sports jacket are many times mistaken, there are some big differences.A sports jacket is textured and oftentimes patterned, whereas a blazer  is a solid color (usually navy or black), made of smooth fabric and is traditionally seen with naval-style brass buttons.

If we look at these three garments as a family, the sports jacket and the blazer are cousins, whereas the suit jacket is their father. So, let me help you get your mind straight on this issue and devote 15 minutes of your life reading this article.

The sports jacket

The sports jacket derives from the experimentation with sports made to measure suit  in the mid-nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century, men were seeking comfort and high fashion in their clothing, and turned to the ever-evolving sports jacket as a fashion-forward.

Nautical blazers

Navy-colored blazer  adorned with brass buttons were predominant throughout the 1920s, and made a stylish sports outfit when paired with white pants. And due to their lightweight fabric, these nautical-inspired blazer  were summer sensations.

Thanks to the British wave of fashion sweeping our North American streets, the traditional nautical blazer  may still look trendy in the late spring or early summer.

Colored blazers 

Blazers rightfully got their name because they were “blazed” with more color and bolder patterns than the refined sports jacket. Blazers weren’t only striped, but they also came in a variety of bright colors, like powder blue

The suit jacket

Frankly, there isn’t much to say about made to measure suit   jacket. They are simply classic. It’s where it all started from. The blazer  and sports jacket wouldn’t have been in our hands if it wasn’t for the suit jacket.
