In the photograph, Peter Harvey's fresco jacket is combined with a shirt of Carlo Riva Lino Arsenal, a Simonnot-Godard pocket square and a Drake's London bow tie. Perhaps the least appreciated of those is the linen shirt, which is another of that set of things that deserve to be more common than they are.

Until the rise of cotton, linen was the most common fabric used close to the skin, which explains the name linens for shirts, handkerchiefs and bedding even though few of those are commonly made from linen any longer. Labor intensive to produce, the economics of linen usually require a higher price than cotton and the cost limits its popularity. On the other hand, linen wears cooler and absorbs moisture better than cotton, making the stuff a particularly comfortable choice for hot weather.

A second negative to linen besides price has been that in shirting weights the stuff creases when it is so much as looked at. Pure linen shirts are one of those things that should be changed at least once a day, which is hardly practical for men who need to be out and about for most of the time. And that is where another one of those blended fabric miracles of modern weaving technology comes into play, for Carlo Riva and David & John Anderson, the two best shirting makers of the world, each offer 50-50ish linen and cotton blends with a finer hand and a reduced propensity to crease than pure linen. Better still, in the somewhat rarified air in which these fabrics play their price is no more than the best pure cottons.

The usual knock on summer shirtings is that they can be sheer. Neither Lino Arsenal or DJAs Zephir 170 have this trait and that makes them perhaps the best choice for hot weather dress shirts.

Linen – The Fabric That Makes You Feel Cool

Just like the title says, linen will help you feel cool… literally. We all know that linen allows for better air circulation but how many of us have intentionally looked for it when shopping?

Most clothes nowadays are either cotton, polyester, or a combination of both. Finding a linen shirt or – God forbid – a linen tailored made suit is more like trying to find the Rosetta Stone.

OK, now you’re probably asking yourself: why on earth should I waste my time looking for linen garments when I could just as easily get them in cotton and get it over with? Cotton is also a natural fiber, what’s wrong with that?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I do have a few reasons that will definitely change your mind.

The first one is comfort. When you put on a linen shirt, if you’re not a style student, you might not even feel the difference. However, when you’re outside, you will surely feel the air currents better than you would in a cotton shirt.

If you happen to live in an area where you get at least a few weeks a year of really hot days, linen will feel like the only fabric your body will not reject.

The second reason is its antibacterial properties. IN short this means they will not catch smell as easily as cotton does. This is more apparent with linen socks, which, for reasons that will be discussed later in this chapter, I don’t recommend.

Third reason for wearing linen is simply the idea of having a wardrobe suitable for any season and meteorologic conditions. It’s about taking care of stylish details that are not apparent for others but, rather, for yourself.

Just like you wear umbrellas or hats or caps when it’s raining… just like you wear suede only when it’s not… and just like you wouldn’t wear sneakers and trainers in winter like some guys do… similarly, you want to wear the right fabric for the right season.

And since wool is mostly for winter (although some wool works in the summer too), cotton for every season (but it depends on how thick it is), linen should be kept for summer or hot autumn and spring days.

Fourth, fifth and sixth, linen offers good UV protection, is non-allergenic (if you ever got rashes from synthetic fibers this you should definitely give linen a try) and non-static, which means it does not accumulate static electricity that you sometimes feel when you take of a sweater, for instance.

Lastly, linen is eco-friendly. Almost no pesticides at all are used to grow it, unlike cotton fields which, according to a statistic I found, accounts for 50% of the World’s pesticide use.

OK, that’s a lot of reasons to wear linen. But let me give you one last reason: price. You’ll find that most linen garments cost about the same as their cotton versions. So why not mix things up a bit and get one right now?

Clothing items

If I succeeded into motivating you to give linen a chance, you’re probably wondering what clothing items come in this fabric? Quite a lot, actually:

· shirts

· Tailored made suit 

· pants

· shorts

· ties

· pocket squares

In addition to those, I also mentioned linen socks earlier and I told you to avoid them. Pretty much anyone who’s ever owned a pair complained that they don’t hug the foot very well. This is both weird and uncomfortable.

If you do want to try them out, I recommend you find a pair that also has some spandex in it, this will help alleviate the problem.

How to Tie a Tie

One of the basic things a man MUST know (besides how to iron a shirt) is how to tie a tie. Ties are starting to be worn more and more. Casual  tailored made suit  adopt them at a larger scale.
If you’re among those who keep their knot undone when they take their tie off, i suggest you take a look at the clips below.

The most popular node is definitely the Four in Hand. Reason? It’s the easiest one plus, it works great for both formal and casual ties. The instructions are simple:

A similar node to the four in hand is the Half Windsor knot. It’s very similar to the way you make it. Just like the previous one, this node is asymmetrical.

Let’s get to one of the classics: the Windsor Knot. It’s a double know, symmetrical, taht goes well with open collar shirts because it’s very wide. The downside is that it makes the neck look thicker. Let’s check the Windsor knot instructions.

The last know I want you to try is the Prince Albert Knot. It pretty narrow and, for this reason, it goes well with narrow collar shirts. Check it out:

Be careful when you make any of the above knots. Ties, especially silk ones, are very sensitive if you pull them too firmly. The same advice goes for when you take the tie off: open the knot gently.

If you’re serious about style (and you should be, since you’re reading my blog), you should be wearing ties a lot. They work with shirts, polo shirt, jeans, chinos, even sneakers. Just make sure you match them to the rest of your tailored made suit.

How to Buy The Right Clothes

One of the things that men don’t know how to do is to choose the right tailored made suit. They take it for granted and thus end up spending TONS of money on clothes that DON”T fit them.

I’ve tried many times to explain my friends what these steps are but they usually don’t listen. On the other hand I have people who pay me to hear these precious info. Strange, huh?

What most men do is the go in to one or two stores and then buy something quickly just get it over with. In some cases they end up getting something that’s identical to what they’re already wearing. 

What I’m trying to say is this: each time you buy a piece of clothing, I want to make sure you’re making a great investment.
Instead of choosing clothes that don’t fit you, I want you to choose clothes that flatter you and your body type.
Instead of buying clothes that are expensive I want you to buy clothes that match each other to form outstanding tailored made suit.

 So what are the actual steps?

1. First of all you need to look into your closet and see what you already have. Since your goal is to have as many great combinations of clothes as possible, you need to check what items you already have.

2. Choose one or two of your BEST clothes. You will wear them on your next shopping trip because you will have to find new clothes that match the ones you already have. Pick an almost complete outfit. In fact, you can choose your best combination you can make with what you already have MINUS one item. This missing item is the one you will eventually buy.

For instance, you may have a great pair of jeans, some nice shoes, a great shirt and you’re missing a vest. To make sure you get the right vest that would go with this outfit, you have to wear the outfit when you’re going through the store to try different vests. Easy, right?

3. When you go shopping, try on as many clothes as possible. I’m talking about the “missing item type” of course (could be the vest or something else). Resist the temptation to purchase something quickly.

4. If you don’t find anything good you don’t have to buy something that you’re not 100% convinced it’s what you want. Go back to the mall next week or go to other malls or stores. If you do find what you’re looking for, get it.

5. In the meantime, make mental notes of other clothes you notice and like but don’t waste time trying them on. You’re busy finding your “missing item” which takes a lot of time as it is. This way you’ll make mental notes of where to find tailored made suit that you like, which can save you time in the future.

Shirt and Tie Combinations For A Black Suit

I know, I know… You have this event and you’re clueless about what to wear. All you know is that you need custom made suits , a shirt and a tie. If it weren’t for your girl, you’d just walk up into the first store you can find and take the first thing the salesperson recommends.

Hey, I’d rather grab a beer too instead of dragging myself through dozens of stores to find something decent to wear.

But image is important. Whether we like to admit it or not, knowing to match our suit, shirt and tie is a must. The combinations are many but I’m going to save you the trouble and confusion you have when it comes down to this topic.

It all boils down to color and pattern coordination. That’s it! I’m going to make it as easy as possible for you to find the right combination. And for this I will simply use… pictures! It doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie when it comes to style, all you have to do is model the pictures. Once you have the shirt and tie perfected, throw on your favorite cufflinks for an outstanding classy look.

It’s so simple even a baby could do it

The basic rule is this: you start with the biggest piece of clothing all the way to the smallest one. (this goes for casual outfits too). In our case:

1 The suit

2 The shirt

3 The tie

In this order.

Let’s assume you already have the black suit and that you want to get the right combination of shirt and tie. If you don’t have it yet, you need to do this first.

Word of advice: don’t buy your suit based on split second decisions. Suits are expensive so make sure you try on as many as you can before you spend your hard earned money on them.

OK, now that you have your suit color, let’s get right into the suit, shirt and tie combinations. Just scroll down to the suit color YOU have and use the pictures for inspiration.

Black suit + white shirt

The easiest combination is the black suit and white shirt, If you’re looking for something classic, this is the combination for you.

What tie to choose in this case? It’s all up to you. The vast majority of colors go well with black and white. For instance, they guy above is wearing a black tie.

The secret is for the tie to contrast well with the shirt. If it’s hard to distinguish the tie from the shirt, you just know something is wrong.

So, for a black suit and a whit shirt, great tie colors are: red, gold, yellow and orange. Take a look:

If you’re going to a more serious even (say, a funeral) you don’t want to wear ties in such bold colors. Go for a simple black tie, or for some other conservative nuances. For instance, a dark blue tie (solid color) is perfect:
 

Patterns are great. Here’s why…

If you have a black suit like the guy above and a white shirt, you can definitely go for a tie with patterns. In fact, I think it’s a GREAT idea that you do.

Patterns are great when you don’t abuse them (i.e. wear too many of them). In this case, a pattern will fit perfectly into the outfit.

Patterns show that you’re style conscious and are a great way to lighten up any black suit.

What patterned tie would I wear if i were the guy in the picture above and I wanted to ditch the blue tie? One that has white on it. A red tie with white stripes, a blue tie with white stripes… anything in a bold color with white stripes.

Having the shirt color in the tie is not a rule. You can do very well without it. Here’s an example. Notice how the striped tie brings the entire outfit to life.

Ready for a colored shirt?

Before going for a colored shirt, make sure you’re you don’t choose a color that’s too bold for an occasion that is too formal.

Take a look at this, this is a great way to stand out in a business meeting:

f you looked carefully, you noticed that the suit above is actually a pinstripe custom made suits. The stripes are not that obvious but this raises a legitimate question: what to wear with a black pinstripe suit?

A pinstripe suit goes well with a striped shirt and a striped tie as long as the thickness of the strips differs. Here’s a great example of a guy who pulled it off (generally speaking, wearing more than 3 patterns at a time can be very tricky):

How To Dress For An Interview (And Get The Job Too!)

OK, you got the interview! You know you’re great for this job, you know you’ll do great… All you have to do now is to make THEM see this. All you need are some great fitting tailored made suit  to show them you’re serious about your career.

Initially you probably thought it’s best to overdress, so you can impress them. Maybe, an hour later, it occurred to you they won’t like that so you figured you should just go casual.

Let me tell you your thinking is close to what you should be REALLY wearing to an interview. You don’t want to be too dressed up but you don’t want to be super casual either.

Someone once said: If you’ll wear jeans and sneakers to your interview, you’ll GET a “jeans and sneakers” type of job.

I can’t guess what job you’re applying for but I’ll assume it’s one where you need to prove to your employee that you’re serious and reliable.

So let’s take it one step at a time.

The very first thing you’ll want to consider is a suit.The suit is the most formal piece of clothing you can go to an interview. When you wear a suit you’ll communicate that you take good care of yourself, that you only want what’s best and that you’ll do an amazing job for that company.

Of course, not all job interview require suits: if you’re applying for a job at a fast-food restaurant, scroll down below for more dressed-down options.

If you’re applying for a sales or managerial type of job, the suit is your only alternative. After you get the job, you’ll have to wear a suit day in and day out.

The only question remaining is how do you stand out in a suit?

There are a few secrets to that.

1. Wear a suit that matches your skin complexion. 

2. 2. Wear a tie that goes with the rest of the suit. It’s all in the details and a man’s tie is the most important detail of a formal outfit. Make sure you do it right.
3. Wear a pocket square. This will definitely make you stand out in a positive way because most guys don’t even KNOW what a pocket square is…

What if i don’t want to wear a suit?

That’s ok, I got you covered. You don’t have to spend $2000 for a suit just for a job interview. However, you STILL have to make a great first impression.

The (only) alternative if you don’t want to wear a suit is… the dress pants.

The dress pants are less formal because they don’t have a matching jacket (by the way, don’t try to improvise a tailored made suit  by pairing dress pants with a sports jacket). Dress pants do great with sports jackets but only if they CONTRAST.

Depending on how hot it is on the day you have the interview, you may or may not wear a jacket. However, what you do have to wear is a long sleeved dress shirt. Don’t go for a long sleeved one even if it’s hot outside. Short sleeved shirts are not considered formal at all so you shouldn’t wear them at an interview.

Wearing a tie is optional. It depends on the type of job you’re applying for and on how much you want to impress.

In case you didn’t know, here’s a few basic rules to formal outfit matching that you absolutely must know.:

1 Match your belt with your shoes

2 Match your socks with your pants

3 Never wear white socks

Here’s my last tip. For a complete professional look, put a pen in the chest pocket of your shirt. Make sure the pen is placed as close to the middle of your body as possible. That’s where professionals wear them.

How To Dress For Your Body Type: XXL

If you have a rather “large” body type, dressing for occasion can be challenging. Most custom made suits are made for the average guy. On the other hand, you want to look your best and hide those extra pounds.

Should you just give up on your quest to being stylish? Absolutely not!

Style is for everyone and has the ability to hide many body flows.

Let’s set some goals for you. Obviously I can’t guess them so I’ll just write all that I can think of here. You only have to read the ones you identify with, then apply my advice.

That’s all you have to do to look sharp!

So… I’m guessing that you…

1 … want to look smaller

2 … want to hide some extra pounds

3 … on the contrary, you want to look even more intimidating and show people what you’re made of!

But before we begin, let me give you the absolute unbreakable rule of style that applies to ALL of the above goals: fit is king.

In your quest for looking thinner (or even larger if that’s what you want), you should never ever wear clothes that don’t fit you perfectly.

I’ve seen many guys who wear clothes one size too small and end up looking like Pinocchio.

Here’s some real advice that you can instantly apply to your large body type and get real results.

1. How to look smaller

If you’re well proportioned, if you don’t have a belly but you just want to look less intimidating, you’ll definitely want to read this (If fact I recommend reading my entire book, “Be Stylish!”, to really look amazing).

The best piece of advice I can give you (and, please note, it is the absolute best thing you can do) is to wear darker colors.
By darker colors I don’t necessarily mean black. Sure, black is good but there are other alternatives. Remember, your goal is to look stylish as well as to look thinner.

So try on these colors too: charcoal gray, navy blue, medium gray. In fact, look at the colors you’re wearing right now and go for darker shades of those same colors!

2. How to Hide Those Extra Pounds

If you’re not genetically blessed to gain weight proportionally, you’re probably the proud owner of a belly… That’s OK, I have some sneaky trick for you to camouflage it.

First of all, the rule above still applies: wear darker colors. If you want to wear lighter ones, here’s a trick I used many times to hide my belly (yes, I have one too):

I would wear… a pink shirt (you can wear any light color you want) with a black vest. The vest would “hide” my belly but my chest would and arms would be dressed in pink.

Get it?

You can hide ONLY the part you don’t want to be seen – you don’t have to dress “all black”.

Here’s a checklist with the items you need if you want to look smaller or thinner:

· V-neck sweaters

· Single breasted sport jackets and  custom made suits  jackets 

· striped shirts (the vertical lines will make you look thinner)

3. Look even larger

If you’re large and you want to look larger, here’s some tips of what not to do.

Don’t wear clothes that are one size too large. You’ll look like you’re drowning in them. Please don’t do it.

If you want to look larger, the easiest thing to do is wear a plaid shirt. A plaid shirt has both vertical and horizontal lines which will trick the human eye into thinking you’re even bigger.
