How to Wear a Vest Casually

Go ahead and give that custom made suits jacket or blazer a day off and give that vest a little moonlighting as a stand-alone piece. In fact, a vest can be a perfect candidate for achieving that dressy-but-not-too-serious-and-still-looking-better-than-99%-of-the-room look at the next after work social.

Here are a couple of our favorite ways to wear a vest for that casual, weekend warrior look:

1 Give the Suit Jacket a Rest - Leave the jacket at home and wear that vest with a well-fitting button-down shirt and some suit pants. For an even more relaxed look, opt for a more casual button down like an oxford or a chambray. And if you’re knotting up, reach for something a little laid back like a knit or cotton tie, rather than a more formal silk tie. Feel free to keep your shirt collar unbuttoned with a loosened up tie knot to let people know you’ve switched from work mode to play mode.

2 Go Vest + Jeans - If you’re pairing your vest with some jeans, you want to go for a dark wash with no fancy fades, major whiskering, holes or bagginess. Make sure the denim is a slimmer fit, so it’s consistent with your vest. With the right pair of jeans, you can achieve a smart casual look and avoid a jarring juxtaposition between dressy and casual. You never want to look business on top and over-relaxed on the bottom.

And please don’t attempt to pull off some 3-piece hybrid, which will make you look like you lost your pants and had to borrow some jeans from your dad.

As for the vest itself, make sure it fits snug, with the length long enough that the sides reach to your belt line. And remember to leave that last vest button unbuttoned.

So give your vest a chance to shine. It’s a great way to add some versatility to your custom made suits. Mix and match, get creative and see what you can come up with!

How to tie a Black Tie

I want ONE tux that will be stylish AND timeless.  Does this exist?

I know I’ll be in a wedding next May where I’ll be invited to wear my own tux but will be given a matching long tie to match with other groomsmen.  Should I go with a two or three button jacket to pull off the tie?  Or does the classic one button notch lapel work (depending on shirt) with any combination?  I am leaning towards the classic one button, so that I can work btoh looks.  I was recetnly told that bowties are, in general, “out” at the moment, and I’d be more stylish at an upcoming chartiy event in a vest/tie combo…1) is this true, and 12) can I pull it off in the classic one button?
Any SPECIFIC advice on what to buy?  I don’t really have a price limit (which is admittedly helpful), and am willing to travel to make the right tux happen for me.

If anything in men’s clothing is a true classic, it is black tie.  So the short answer is an unequivocal “yes.”

The Platonic ideal for black tie is midnight blue, single-breasted, with a single button, a peak lapel, and grosgrain facings on the lapel.  The facing should match the (self-tie) bow tie and cummerbund. The pants are pleated and without a cuff.  The shirt features a detachable wing collar, French cuffs and a pique bib.  Opera pumps are worn with black silk hose.  The pants are held up with suspenders that fasten with buttons, and the shirt is closed with studs.

There is room for other options, of course.

· In the absence of midnight blue cloth, black can be used.  (Midnight blue is more attractive in low and artificial light.)

· Facings can be satin instead of grosgrain.

· In warm weather, an ivory dinner jacket is an appropriate substitute for the traditional jacket.

· A pleated shirt with a turndown collar can be substituted for the wing collar.  (Slightly less formal.)

· A shawl lapel can be used rather than peak.  (Again, less formal.)

· The jacket can be double-breasted, particularly if you are tall and thin.  (Again, less formal - and remember to leave your cummerbund at home.)

· You can substitute a waistcoat in the same material as the coat for the cummerbund.

· Patent oxfords can be worn in favor of opera pumps.

· The pants need not be pleated.

· A white pocket square (preferably linen) or a boutonniere can be added.

· If you’re in a homier black-tie environment - a friendly party, entertaining, that sort of thing - you can wear a velvet dinner jacket or slippers.

That’s the basics of black tie.  Oh - and remember that black tie is for evening social occasions.  The stroller is the equivalent to black tie for daytime wear, and morning dress the more formal alternative.  About 6PM should be the cut-off.

As per your specific concerns:

A long tie should not be worn with a tuxedo.  Can you imagine if we let the groom pick the bridesmaids’ outfits?  Oof.  Of course, it’s not worth starting a fight over, so just get something good and do what they say this time.  I’d say getting a tux with a waistcoat and a shirt with turn-down lapels would help cover for the long tie’s blech factor.

Bow ties are most certainly not out, especially for black tie.  In fact, I can’t think of a time within the last 25 years that bow ties have been more in.  And like I said - long tie in your black tie ensemble?  Blech.

Never, ever buy a notch-lapel tuxedo.  Again: blech.

A vest is perfectly fine with a one-button tuxedo.  But not with a long tie.

Shirt and Tie Combinations For A Black Suit

I know, I know… You have this event and you’re clueless about what to wear. All you know is that you need custom made suits , a shirt and a tie. If it weren’t for your girl, you’d just walk up into the first store you can find and take the first thing the salesperson recommends.

Hey, I’d rather grab a beer too instead of dragging myself through dozens of stores to find something decent to wear.

But image is important. Whether we like to admit it or not, knowing to match our suit, shirt and tie is a must. The combinations are many but I’m going to save you the trouble and confusion you have when it comes down to this topic.

It all boils down to color and pattern coordination. That’s it! I’m going to make it as easy as possible for you to find the right combination. And for this I will simply use… pictures! It doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie when it comes to style, all you have to do is model the pictures. Once you have the shirt and tie perfected, throw on your favorite cufflinks for an outstanding classy look.

It’s so simple even a baby could do it

The basic rule is this: you start with the biggest piece of clothing all the way to the smallest one. (this goes for casual outfits too). In our case:

1 The suit

2 The shirt

3 The tie

In this order.

Let’s assume you already have the black suit and that you want to get the right combination of shirt and tie. If you don’t have it yet, you need to do this first.

Word of advice: don’t buy your suit based on split second decisions. Suits are expensive so make sure you try on as many as you can before you spend your hard earned money on them.

OK, now that you have your suit color, let’s get right into the suit, shirt and tie combinations. Just scroll down to the suit color YOU have and use the pictures for inspiration.

Black suit + white shirt

The easiest combination is the black suit and white shirt, If you’re looking for something classic, this is the combination for you.

What tie to choose in this case? It’s all up to you. The vast majority of colors go well with black and white. For instance, they guy above is wearing a black tie.

The secret is for the tie to contrast well with the shirt. If it’s hard to distinguish the tie from the shirt, you just know something is wrong.

So, for a black suit and a whit shirt, great tie colors are: red, gold, yellow and orange. Take a look:

If you’re going to a more serious even (say, a funeral) you don’t want to wear ties in such bold colors. Go for a simple black tie, or for some other conservative nuances. For instance, a dark blue tie (solid color) is perfect:
 

Patterns are great. Here’s why…

If you have a black suit like the guy above and a white shirt, you can definitely go for a tie with patterns. In fact, I think it’s a GREAT idea that you do.

Patterns are great when you don’t abuse them (i.e. wear too many of them). In this case, a pattern will fit perfectly into the outfit.

Patterns show that you’re style conscious and are a great way to lighten up any black suit.

What patterned tie would I wear if i were the guy in the picture above and I wanted to ditch the blue tie? One that has white on it. A red tie with white stripes, a blue tie with white stripes… anything in a bold color with white stripes.

Having the shirt color in the tie is not a rule. You can do very well without it. Here’s an example. Notice how the striped tie brings the entire outfit to life.

Ready for a colored shirt?

Before going for a colored shirt, make sure you’re you don’t choose a color that’s too bold for an occasion that is too formal.

Take a look at this, this is a great way to stand out in a business meeting:

f you looked carefully, you noticed that the suit above is actually a pinstripe custom made suits. The stripes are not that obvious but this raises a legitimate question: what to wear with a black pinstripe suit?

Stripes. Pinstripes.

A pinstripe suit goes well with a striped shirt and a striped tie as long as the thickness of the strips differs. Here’s a great example of a guy who pulled it off (generally speaking, wearing more than 3 patterns at a time can be very tricky):

How To Dress For Your Body Type: XXL

If you have a rather “large” body type, dressing for occasion can be challenging. Most custom made suits are made for the average guy. On the other hand, you want to look your best and hide those extra pounds.

Should you just give up on your quest to being stylish? Absolutely not!

Style is for everyone and has the ability to hide many body flows.

Let’s set some goals for you. Obviously I can’t guess them so I’ll just write all that I can think of here. You only have to read the ones you identify with, then apply my advice.

That’s all you have to do to look sharp!

So… I’m guessing that you…

1 … want to look smaller

2 … want to hide some extra pounds

3 … on the contrary, you want to look even more intimidating and show people what you’re made of!

But before we begin, let me give you the absolute unbreakable rule of style that applies to ALL of the above goals: fit is king.

In your quest for looking thinner (or even larger if that’s what you want), you should never ever wear clothes that don’t fit you perfectly.

I’ve seen many guys who wear clothes one size too small and end up looking like Pinocchio.

Here’s some real advice that you can instantly apply to your large body type and get real results.

1. How to look smaller

If you’re well proportioned, if you don’t have a belly but you just want to look less intimidating, you’ll definitely want to read this (If fact I recommend reading my entire book, “Be Stylish!”, to really look amazing).

The best piece of advice I can give you (and, please note, it is the absolute best thing you can do) is to wear darker colors.
By darker colors I don’t necessarily mean black. Sure, black is good but there are other alternatives. Remember, your goal is to look stylish as well as to look thinner.

So try on these colors too: charcoal gray, navy blue, medium gray. In fact, look at the colors you’re wearing right now and go for darker shades of those same colors!

2. How to Hide Those Extra Pounds

If you’re not genetically blessed to gain weight proportionally, you’re probably the proud owner of a belly… That’s OK, I have some sneaky trick for you to camouflage it.

First of all, the rule above still applies: wear darker colors. If you want to wear lighter ones, here’s a trick I used many times to hide my belly (yes, I have one too):

I would wear… a pink shirt (you can wear any light color you want) with a black vest. The vest would “hide” my belly but my chest would and arms would be dressed in pink.

Get it?

You can hide ONLY the part you don’t want to be seen – you don’t have to dress “all black”.

Here’s a checklist with the items you need if you want to look smaller or thinner:

· V-neck sweaters

· Single breasted sport jackets and  custom made suits  jackets 

· striped shirts (the vertical lines will make you look thinner)

3. Look even larger

If you’re large and you want to look larger, here’s some tips of what not to do.

Don’t wear clothes that are one size too large. You’ll look like you’re drowning in them. Please don’t do it.

If you want to look larger, the easiest thing to do is wear a plaid shirt. A plaid shirt has both vertical and horizontal lines which will trick the human eye into thinking you’re even bigger.

Pea Coat

The pea coat tailored made suit is my favorite winter coat, because it’s the “manliest” out there. It’s originally been worn by 18th century European sailors, who, because of the harsh conditions, needed a double breasted item of clothing to keep them warm.

You’ll recognize the pea coat by its…

- Double breasted jacket
- Wide lapels
- Vertical pockets
- Large buttons

You’ll see in the pictures below why I said it’s so manly. But how the practical uses of a winter coat are more important than the way it looks. So let’s talk about this for a moment.

What’s it made of?

Pea coats are usually made of wool and are of navy blue color. Wool is the best fabric to wear in cold temperatures, which makes the pea coat  tailored made suit  a good choice.

However, if you face extreme temperatures, you should probably consider something that will keep you even warmer. Pea coats you find in the stores are not really designed for extreme temperatures.

A nice bonus for some pea coats is that their lapels can be turned up and buttoned, to keep your neck warm. You may not need to do this if you like to wear scarves, but it’s good to know.

OK, assuming you don’t live anywhere near the North Pole, let’s see some actual pictures of pea coats.

Here’s a classic pea coat. It instantly hits you that it’s a man’s coat.

The thing I really want you to notice is the outfit. Notice how the guy is wearing a light gray sweater. The contrast with the coat is very good. The entire outfit is not very colorful, yet it’s very stylish.
Also notice how the last button is kept unbuttoned. This is the way to go unless it’s really cold outside. Just like in the case of suit jackets, the last button should be kept unbuttoned. This is done for two reasons.
The first reason is that you will look more relaxed. Buttoning all your buttons (and this goes for shirts too) will make you look… “tight”.

The second reason is that you’ll feel more comfortable when sitting down. If the last button were buttoned, you’ll feel a little uncomfortable and you would have trouble keeping your legs in a comfortable position.

Here’s another example. Again, look at the outfit. The pea coat contrasts with the white pants very well. I know some guys would never wear white pants during winter but that’s really a personal choice.

The thing with white pants during winter, autumn and spring is that they can get dirty very easily. But, from a fashion perspective, they’re a great choice that will definitely make you stand out.

The next guy decided he wants a little more attention. He raised the collar from his pea coat. Take a look:

Some will say this raising the collar thing is outdated. I say, again, that it’s a matter of personal preference.

But you’re not alone on this journey. There are people to help you every step of the way in putting together those amazing outfits. The tailor is one of them.

A strange feeling of calm hits you right when you walk into his workshop. A crowded little place full of stacked clothes. It’s as if you’ve stepped foot into another dimension; one far away form the noisy streets.

After about half a minutes’ wait (just enough to get accustomed with the silence), he shows up from behind a curtain. Shy and friendly, he greets you and asks you to sit down.

How may I help you? he asks.

You’re not sure. It’s your first time. So you open up your bag with your latest aquisitions and leave the rest… to him.

Please undress right over there. he politely asks you.

Oh no, do I have to? you’re thinking to yourself. But you don’t say it out loud. You know he’s been doing this for 20 years so you listen to him… to the letter.

So you take each of the clothing items you brought with yourself. You want to get this over with – getting in and out of clothes is just not your thing.

You put on the first shirt.

Yes, that’s very loose. he exclaims. The sleeves are too long, too large and there’s too much material on the sides. The length of the actual shirt is ok, on the other hand.

How long does it take to put the needles? you timidly ask.

Actually I’m almost done. Let’s put on the other 2 shirts.

There! That’s just perfect! he exclaims after marking how much he wants to shorten each dress shirt. Now let’s take a look at those chinos. How short do you want them?

Shorter than usual. I want to be able to show my socks.

Sure, I can do that. But what if you want to change your mind?

Ummm…

I’ll make them a little shorter than usualbut not too short.

Ok, no problem. Oh! i need them to fit well at the bottom. I want them to follow the body line perfectly.

Consider it done. I can’t shrink them above the knee but below it I can remove as much material as it’s necessary. There we go, sir!

Awesome! I thought this was going to take longer. Oh, wait! I have this V-neck sweater…

The sleeves look pretty good. They fit your arms very well.

Yes, but, you see, the sleeves are too long…

Sorry, there’s nothing I can do about it.

But you did the same thing for the shirt… I just want them shorter to be able to see the shirt’s sleeves from underneath it… maybe to roll up the shirts’ sleeves over it and look really stylish?

There is nothing I can do. You see how this is sewed here?

Ummm, yes.

It’s one piece. It’s not like a shirt’s cuff. I can’t open the threads, cut them, then put them back on. It will ruin the entire shirt.

Oh, ok then. So how could you shrink it then?

You see how it’s knitted on the inside of the arms and on the inside of the body? Those are the places where I can take material out. But since it fits you perfectly except for the sleeves, there’s nothing more I can do.

I see. Well, I guess that’s that. I’ll be more careful next time now that I know what you can and can’t do.

When can I come get them?

You’ll have them 2 days from today. your tailor replies.
