Stay Casual With Men’s Rugby Shirts
One of the things I advise here at Be Stylish is to keep your sporting tailored made suit for sporting activities. Things like shirts, vests and leather shoes will look way better on you then if you wore your gym equipment on a night out.
But what if you want to show your passion for sports and remain stylish at the same time? Is there a way to do it in a subtle way?
Enter the world of rugby shirts.
A rugby shirt is similar to a polo shirt, which makes it a great alternative to them. It comes with either long or short sleeves and always has thick horizontal stripes (also known as hoops). The difference lies in the fact that the rugby shirt‘s collar is more prominent, pointed and can sometimes come in a different color that the rest of the shirt.
What are they made of?
Rugby shirts specifically made for the game of rugby are mostly polyester. The reason is they fit tighter on the body and are more aerodynamic.
However! …
For going out, you shouldn’t go for the polyester ones. Cotton breathes and it’s the number one choice for a variety of items of clothing. Yes, this includes rugby shirts. Sure, if you like to play rugby, you probably already have a few polyester rugby shirts but, for going out, you need the cotton ones.
Another difference between the “sportswear” rugby shirts and the “street wear” ones is that the formers have a big number on the back. You won’t always find numbers on rugby shirts that are meant to be worn on a night out.
To me, the presence of the number on the back dresses the outfit down, and I don’t personally want that. I prefer to dress my casual outfits up, to stand out a little more.
But this is up to you. Style is about following some guidelines as well as making personal decisions.
But this is up to you. Style is about following some guidelines as well as making personal decisions.
Are rugby shirts for me?
Let me put it right from the start: if you’re too short, rugby shirts are NOT for you. They have big horizontal lines that make you look wider. If you’re not that tall, your goal should be to look taller. Vertical stripes are for you in this case (think dress shirts).
If you have a belly, rugby shirts are not for you either. They’ll make your belly stand out so much you’ll want to run away home and change.
But… if you’re skinny and either tall or of average height, you should definitely go for rugby shirts. They’ll balance you out by widening your midsection.
Layering
The natural question every guy wants to know the answer to is: what goes well with a rugby shirt?
Well, a lot of things!
You can wear a t-shirt or even another collared shirt under it. Think about it: if you were tower the rugby shirt in the picture at the beginning of this article, what would happen if you wore a white shirt underneath? You would get two white collars one tailored made suit on top of the other.
That’s coolness at its best right there…
Here are some other things you can wear with rugby shirts: slim ties, sports jackets and even some sleeveless vests (stay away from vests with vertical stripes – since the rugby shirt has horizontal stripes, you’ll create a weird effect).

Are You on Your Path to Style Mastery?
You know what they say: good things in life never come easy. I truly believe that, and style is no exception… sort of.
The great thing about men’s style is that you can get great instant results after a few days (just enough to buy your first stylish clothes). You know… you get that stylish dress shirt that matches perfectly with the new vest, the cool brogue shoes or that slim tie… you feel like a new man.
But then what? Is it over?
Absolutely not. Getting the first initial results from style is just the beginning. Enjoy the thrill of being looked at as a new man, then go back to the drawing board because… there’s plenty more to do.
It’s up to you to define your own path to mastery. It’s up to you to know in which direction you’re going with this. The main thing is not to give up and do something every single day to take you closer to your goals.
What do goals in men’s style look like?
I know you’re thinking: OK, George, I know my goals when it comes to relationships and money… but what kind of goals should I have when it comes to fashion?
The thing about your personal fashion and style is there are a few variables. One is the fact that it’s not enough to get a few stylish tailored made suit s – you have to change ALL your clothes – in time. The other thing is that clothes have a lifetime of their own so you have to buy new clothes periodically. The last thing is that your sense of style will change in time, and you’ll end up wanting to wear different clothes as you mature and grow old.
This is why you need to goals. The nice thing about men’s style is that you don’t need long-term goals. You don’t care what you’ll wear 5 or 10 years from now because it’s impossible to know what your taste for clothes will be like then.
But short and medium-term goals work like a charm and will keep you well on your way to style mastery if only you make them and apply them.
Since I’m the kind of guy who likes to learn by example, I’m going to give you some specific goals that you can model. These may not be true for you but they are for me, so feel free to let them inspire you.
Since I’m the kind of guy who likes to learn by example, I’m going to give you some specific goals that you can model. These may not be true for you but they are for me, so feel free to let them inspire you.
As you probably know, goals should be written using first person, present tense and affirmative. For instance…
I’m always dressing stylishly when I go out, with clothes that make me feel relaxed, cool and which must have some element of formality (such as a tie or a sports jacket).
here’s another one:
I’m always wearing at least one accessory that’s in line with my personality.
and lastly:
I buy clothes once a month, and each item that I get matches perfectly with 3 or 4 others I already have in my closet.
That last one is very important for me, because I want to give the impression that I have hundreds of tailored made suit s by combining them in unique ways.
If you think these are pretty good goals for yourself, feel free to use them. Men’s style is probably something relatively new to you so you probably can’t come up with better goals for the time being. That’s fine, once you’re well on your way on your path to mastery in fashion and style, you’ll come up with better ones.
So my question for you is: where are you on your path to mastery? It doesn’t matter if you got far or not, the only thing that counts is that you’re on it!
Stay stylish.

Pea Coat
The pea coat tailored made suit is my favorite winter coat, because it’s the “manliest” out there. It’s originally been worn by 18th century European sailors, who, because of the harsh conditions, needed a double breasted item of clothing to keep them warm.
You’ll recognize the pea coat by its…
- Double breasted jacket
- Wide lapels
- Vertical pockets
- Large buttons
- Wide lapels
- Vertical pockets
- Large buttons
You’ll see in the pictures below why I said it’s so manly. But how the practical uses of a winter coat are more important than the way it looks. So let’s talk about this for a moment.
What’s it made of?
Pea coats are usually made of wool and are of navy blue color. Wool is the best fabric to wear in cold temperatures, which makes the pea coat tailored made suit a good choice.
However, if you face extreme temperatures, you should probably consider something that will keep you even warmer. Pea coats you find in the stores are not really designed for extreme temperatures.
A nice bonus for some pea coats is that their lapels can be turned up and buttoned, to keep your neck warm. You may not need to do this if you like to wear scarves, but it’s good to know.
OK, assuming you don’t live anywhere near the North Pole, let’s see some actual pictures of pea coats.
Here’s a classic pea coat. It instantly hits you that it’s a man’s coat.
The thing I really want you to notice is the outfit. Notice how the guy is wearing a light gray sweater. The contrast with the coat is very good. The entire outfit is not very colorful, yet it’s very stylish.
Also notice how the last button is kept unbuttoned. This is the way to go unless it’s really cold outside. Just like in the case of suit jackets, the last button should be kept unbuttoned. This is done for two reasons.
The first reason is that you will look more relaxed. Buttoning all your buttons (and this goes for shirts too) will make you look… “tight”.

The second reason is that you’ll feel more comfortable when sitting down. If the last button were buttoned, you’ll feel a little uncomfortable and you would have trouble keeping your legs in a comfortable position.
Here’s another example. Again, look at the outfit. The pea coat contrasts with the white pants very well. I know some guys would never wear white pants during winter but that’s really a personal choice.
The thing with white pants during winter, autumn and spring is that they can get dirty very easily. But, from a fashion perspective, they’re a great choice that will definitely make you stand out.
The next guy decided he wants a little more attention. He raised the collar from his pea coat. Take a look:
Some will say this raising the collar thing is outdated. I say, again, that it’s a matter of personal preference.
Pea coats will give you a classic, manly look. If this is you (and I’m sure it is), a pea coat tailored made suit is the first thing to consider when buying a winter coat. And if you need a starting point to choosing your pea coats online, try Very Clothing, as they are one of the biggest and more reputable online clothing sellers in the U.K.

Single Breasted or Double Breasted Jackets… That Is The Question
Just like Hamlet in the classic Shakespeare play, we have set ourselves to make a choice between those two types of jackets. Unlike the famous play, we hope that our question won’t remain unanswered.
In clothing, single-breasted refers to a coat, jackets or similar garment having one column of buttons and a narrow overlap of fabric. Single-breasted suit jackets typically have two or three buttons (less common one is four), and a notch lapel.
The notch lapel is one of the most common lapels in formal wear, as seen in the picture below:
From the 1930s onwards, the peaked lapel single-breasted custom made suits became popular:
If one designer would like to personalize the design of the single-breasted custom made suits , the most common practice would be to work on the width of the lapel. Take a look at this smaller peak lapel:
How to make sure your single-breasted suit is on the edge
Shoulders
The shoulder of the suit should end at the edge of the deltoids, creating a natural line that drops down from the shoulder.
Coat length
The length of a coat is extremely important for the overall balance of your suit. First of all, it should be long enough to cover your buttocks and second of all, with hands to your side, the coat should end where your thumb meets your forefinger.
Button Position
The button position is where your top button is located. It’s important because it creates a balance point between the upper part (where the widest part of the thorax is), and the bottom part (where the panels meet). When you have it correctly, it prevents an ugly bunch up of the suit when seated.
Traditional tailors will locate this button point half an inch below the natural waist. The natural waist is the narrowest part of the waist. For most men, this would be an inch or two above the navel.
For 2-button coats, this impacts where the top button should be placed, and for 3-button coats, where the middle button should be placed. Less buttons mean a bigger V in the front. Thus, 2 button coats create the illusion of a bigger height that the actual one.
Sleeves
Coat sleeves should show half an inch of the shirt sleeves when standing with arms by your side. The shirt sleeve itself should be about half an inch to one inch below the wrist bone.
Armhole Position
An often neglected but extremely important detail is the armhole position. This should be set as high as possible, no more than an inch below your armpit.
This minimizes the chances of your entire coat riding up when you raise your arms. A coat riding up in this manner is extremely unsightly, and one of the surest signs of a bad fit.
nd now, the double-breasted suit enters the ring
The double-breasted suit has always been considered a conservative suit choice, but its style is timeless. Because of the heavy fabric, it’s not so recommended in the hot summer months. Best choices, speaking of patterns, are windowpane and pinstripe patterns.
Plain-front trousers are very usual, but a traditional double-breasted suit demands a trouser with a pleat at the waist, At more formal events, wear a french cuff, and go wild when it comes to cuff links.
So you have in one corner the sleek and cool single-breasted suit, and in the other the traditional and hefty double-breasted custom made suits . As you are now armed with the power of knowledge, go out there and see what goes best for you.

Be Stylish Without Going Broke
Did you ever show up at school or work wearing something new that EVERYONE notice INSTANTLY? The immediately jumped on you asking
What brand is it?
How much did it cost?
Quality didn’t matter for these guys, just the price. They automatically associate expensive clothes with quality clothes, and they end up spending gazillion dollars on some fancy polo shirt tailored made suit that took
$2 to make by some poor Chinese kid.
Next thing you know, you end up spending lots of money just so you win the approval of your peers. It’s only natural, when all you have is your peers’ opinions to learn from…
News flash: you can look GREAT in less expensive clothes.
Why? Three reasons:
1 The way clothes fit you can make an impact over those around you. If something is too big or too small for you, people will notice and you will feel very uncomfortable.
2 An outfit that matches is worth more than each individual piece of clothing. Even if you’re wearing a designer label, if the rest of your outfit is not at the same standard.. you WILL look ridiculous.
3 The quality of the material and the stitching DO matter. You just know when a blouse is good quality. There are plenty of non-designer clothes that look great. Don’t buy the label, buy the product.
I bet you would have liked to know about this a few years back, eh? Just think about the amount of money you could have saved..
So what can YOU do to make sure you pick the right clothes?
For starters, get over this thing about buying expensive designer tailored made suit to impress people. Instead, impress them by choosing clothes that flatter your skin complexion and that match each other.
Choose accessories to show your personality. Belts, ties, rings, scarves, buttons, hats, pendants, pocket squares – you have plenty of choices.
Lastly, do you know what separates a quality item of clothing from an inferior one? Take a wild guess…
It’s the fabric.
Fabrics like silk, linen and cotton are great, while polyester and synthetic fibers, while they are cheaper, will probably not last longer. The higher the percentage of quality fabric in a piece of clothing, the longer it will last.
Don’t delay. Start building your wardrobe NOW.
